Words from the Heart for Sunday December 26th, 2021
For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6 (NRSV)
A Child Has Been Born
Canada saw a record low fertility rate in 2019, according to Statistics Canada data. The total fertility rate that year was 1.47 births per woman over the course of her reproductive life. Populations need a birth rate of at least 2.1 births per woman, but Canada has not met this threshold since 1971. This means that the number of babies being born is not enough for the current population to replace itself. There were 372,038 live births in Canada in 2019.
I’m sure you feel like I do whenever I see a newborn baby – a miracle has just taken place. Each and every baby is unique, knit together in his or her mother’s womb by a loving Creator who loves that child. It’s why Christians are unabashedly and uncompromisingly pro-life. On this Boxing Day, with the presents freshly opened and the Christmas dinner leftovers still in the fridge, our minds continue to ponder the mystery of the One whose birth has impacted our lives eternally. If every birth is unique, and it is, Jesus’ birth stands above all others – and that is because of who this child is. Isaiah 9:6 reminds us, “For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” The prophet understood that this child whose birth we celebrate came as fully human. But he also understood that He is so much more. No wonder there is so much mystery to this time of the year. God has stepped into our world, and into the life of each human being who has put their faith in Jesus.
These have been words from the heart.
