“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Matthew 6:19-21 NIV

Storing Treasures

A barrel of silver coins is believed to be hidden somewhere underwater in Opinicon Lake, Ontario. There are many variations of the story of how it ended up there, but it’s generally believed that the treasure is still there. A huge canoe crossed the lake in 1835, carrying crew members and a barrel of silver coins as pay for employees at Davis’ Rapids and Jones Falls. The barrel, however, went overboard when the boat was pushed sideways by massive waves. Fortunately, the crew members survived by clinging onto the boat, but the barrel sank.

From our childhood we have dreamt of finding buried treasure. There are those who spend their entire lives searching for treasure that they believe is hidden somewhere. There is an entire reality TV show on the History Channel in Canada called the Curse of Oak Hill that follows those trying to find buried treasure on that Nova Scotia island. The Bible speaks about storing treasures. Here is what Jesus said in Matthew 6:19-21: “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” True treasure is not found in a chest lost in the sea somewhere. True treasure is a rich spiritual life that is only experienced in a relationship with Jesus Christ. This treasure is such things as life, joy, peace, forgiveness, and redemption. This treasure is stored up in heaven and hidden deep in the heart of all who love Jesus Christ.

These have been words from the heart.
