Words from the Heart for Sunday August 4th, 2019
He will swallow up death forever. The Sovereign Lord will wipe away the tears from all faces; he will remove his people’s disgrace from all the earth. The Lord has spoken.
Isaiah 25:8 (NIV)
Many older Canadians remember the T. Eaton Company with fondness – both its national chain of retail stores and the annual Eaton’s catalogue. Eaton’s transformed retailing in Canada, and its methods were eagerly adopted by retailers throughout the world. Many approaches to sales and service that are taken for granted by customers today were originally popularised by Timothy Eaton and his store. Few defunct companies evoke the same strong emotions among Canadians as does Eaton’s. Although the Eaton’s stores and the catalogue are gone forever, the name remains with the Eaton’s Centre and Timothy Eaton Memorial Church, both in Toronto.
Tears are far too common in this world. In almost 40 years in ministry, I have sat with far too many people who have been in times of crisis and grief. The best anyone can do at that time is to sit with the people and shed tears with them. There is nothing another human being can do to wipe away the tears or remove the reason for the grief. But Isaiah 25:8 tells us that this is coming: “He will swallow up death forever. The Sovereign Lord will wipe away the tears from all faces; he will remove his people’s disgrace from all the earth. The Lord has spoken.” What a future there is in store for all who love the Lord Jesus. Death, the great separator, has brought grief to every individual and every family since sin entered into the human experience. But God has a plan to destroy death and when Jesus burst forth from the tomb on the first Easter, the plan was put into place. One day, soon, death will be destroyed and tears will be wiped away. Forever.
These have been words from the heart.
