If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

Romans 10:9 NIV

You Will Be Saved

The Fortunes were a well-named family in the early part of the 20th century: they made a fortune in Manitoba real estate. And in 1912, they left Winnipeg for a grand tour of Europe. It was supposed to be a happy occasion, and was until their return trip to Canada … onboard the Titanic. Only Mary Fortune was saved – on the last lifeboat. She would never remarry and would go on to oversee the development of the famous Avro Arrow aircraft.

One of the first things that Jesus often commanded someone whose life had been transformed by Him, or whom He had healed was to go home and tell people there what had happened. When Jesus called Nathaniel to follow Him, the first thing that Jesus did was to take Nathaniel home to Cana for the wedding – so that everyone who knew Nathaniel would see that he had become a follower of Jesus. When we come to faith in Jesus we are always called to tell someone what Jesus has done for us. So it shouldn’t surprise us that Paul would write this in Romans 10:9: “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” There is no place in the Christian life for our faith being a “private thing” as I’ve heard people say. In fact, just the opposite is true. The Christian faith is always a public faith – we are called to share with everybody that Jesus is Lord. As you do, you will find that your own faith is growing stronger. Take time today to share your faith – let someone know that Jesus is your Lord.

These have been words from the heart.
