They also cast lots, just as their relatives the descendants of Aaron did, in the presence of King David and of Zadok, Ahimelek, and the heads of families of the priests and of the Levites. The families of the oldest brother were treated the same as those of the youngest.

1 Chronicles 24:31 (NIV)

Cast Lots

If you’ve ever had a desire to live in La Belle Province, have I got a deal for you. The town of Saint-Louis-de-Blandford, about half way between Montreal and Quebec City is giving away free lots. Back in 2013 the town purchased a large tract of land and divided it into 40 lots, which they have been giving away to anyone willing to move there and develop the lot. The policy requires the buyer to put a $1,000 down payment on the lot and agree to build a home valued at a minimum of $125,000. This gives a whole new meaning to casting lots.

On this Resurrection Day we celebrate the empty tomb and the risen Saviour! Death has been defeated, the way to God is guaranteed and eternal life is available to all who receive the living Lord Jesus as Saviour and Lord. When Jesus died on the Cross, the Temple curtain was torn in two and now the God who had been hidden behind that curtain could be boldly approached. The Old Testament worship system had been finally done away. There is an interesting verse in 1 Chronicles 24:31: “They also cast lots, just as their relatives the descendants of Aaron did, in the presence of King David and of Zadok, Ahimelek, and the heads of families of the priests and of the Levites. The families of the oldest brother were treated the same as those of the youngest.” The oldest brother was treated the same as the youngest. This was not the case in Jewish society – the oldest son got everything. But it points to the day when Jesus, on Resurrection Day, would make all things new and all are equally welcome to the joys of His Kingdom.

These have been words from the heart.
