Listen to advice and accept discipline, and at the end you will be counted among the wise.

Proverbs 19:20 NIV

Accept Discipline

It has been said that Canada’s political party discipline is the toughest in the world. It’s not just a partisan rant from those who are dissatisfied with the current state of politics. Experts say Canada’s government really is more controlling and less tolerant of dissent than most other democracies in the free world. Almost all discourse in the Canadian Parliament is scripted by party staffers. Questions posed of the government rarely meet straight answers. Politicians vote as their party leaders dictate nearly 100 per cent of the time. Few private members’ initiatives get past first reading.

Over the past number of days, we have been focusing on what the Bible says about wisdom. God offers His wisdom to us, through His word, and by His Spirit, and we are clearly told that we should give up everything, and do all we can, in order to discover God’s wisdom. He promises to give His wisdom to us generously. Solomon, the wisest man to ever live, noticed something else. Godly wisdom is often available through mature Christians who speak into our lives. So, Solomon wrote, in Proverbs 19:20: “Listen to advice and accept discipline, and at the end you will be counted among the wise.” I am so grateful for mature believers who spoke into my life when I was young. I was blessed as a young believer to have adults who gave me wisdom and guidance when I needed it most. They taught me Biblical principles, and when I got anywhere near veering off the narrow way, they steered me back. We need each other in the family of God, and we need to give each other permission to give Biblical advice and discipline when needed.

These have been words from the heart.
