Words from the Heart for Sunday April 11th, 2021
You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.
Exodus 20:7 (NIV)
Do Not Misuse the Name of the Lord
The Coat of Arms and National Flag of Canada are protected by the Trade-marks Act against unauthorized use for commercial purposes. Section 9 of the Act states that “No person shall adopt in connection with a business, as a trade mark or otherwise, any mark consisting of, or so nearly resembling as to be likely to be mistaken for … the arms, crest or flag adopted and used at any time by Canada or by any province or municipal corporation in Canada.”
It seems to me that the use of vulgarity has increased significantly over the past few years. Somebody said that it only took movies a few decades to go from silent to unspeakable. Ephesians 4:29 is clear for the follower of Jesus when it says “let there be no foul language, but good words instead.” That is true in all things, but particularly when it comes to the use of God’s name. In Exodus 20:7 God commands his people: “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.” We live in a society that uses God’s name so flippantly. The precious name of Jesus is spewed out as a curse and people use the term “my God” without even thinking. The Bible speaks of the power of God’s name. It tells us that there is no other name except Jesus by which we can be saved. No wonder the enemy of God and of our souls wants those powerful names used like they are so often in our day. Follower of Jesus, always use His name to honour Him.
These have been words from the heart.
