Words from the Heart for Saturday September 5th, 2020
Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground.”
Genesis 1:28 (NLT)
Govern the Earth
Many Canadians believe that Canada is governed by the Prime Minister and his cabinet. In fact, as a Parliamentary democracy, constitutionally Canada’s head of state is Queen Elizabeth II. She is represented by the governor general at the federal level and by ten lieutenant governors provincially. The governor general grants royal assent to bills passed in Parliament. She summons and dissolves Parliament, reads the speech from the throne, signs certain state documents and presides over certain swearing-in ceremonies.
When God created Adam and Eve, He gave them a command. It was the first command given to human beings in the Bible. In Genesis 1:28, we read, “Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground.” We often see commands as onerous and demanding. But that’s not the spirit of this verse. The Bible says that God blessed them by giving them the command to be fruitful and multiply. Adam and Eve were to populate the planet. Our first parents will forever be honoured because of their faithfulness to this command. From them, over 7 billion human beings fill this planet. But there was more to the command. God also gave them the great responsibility to govern the planet. We are to take care of God’s creation. That is also a great blessing and a great responsibility. Christians are called to care for all of God’s creation – the souls of people that are lost without Christ, and the beauty of the world that God has spoken into being. How obedient are we being to God’s command?
These have been words from the heart.
