The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him.

Psalm 28:7 NIV

The Lord is My Strength and Shield

When needed for protection, Canadian police services use what is known as a ballistic shield. A ballistic shield, also called a tactical shield or bulletproof shield, is a protection device designed to stop or deflect bullets and other projectiles fired at their carrier. Ballistic shields also protect from less serious threats such as thrown items. Ballistic shields are similar to riot shields, but offer greater protection and are typically used by special units or in situations where riot shields would not offer adequate protection.

The world has always been a violent place, since the day that Cain killed his brother Abel. Every morning we hear of violence in our cities and even in the little rural village where I live there is an occasional act of violence. We just can’t avoid it as long as we live in this broken world. Those of us who love the Lord Jesus have experienced His peace in our hearts. And while He never promises that by giving our lives to Him in faith we will be protected from the challenges of living in this world, He does remind us in His word that He is constantly there for us. King David wrote of this in Psalm 28:7: “The Lord is my strength and shield; my heart trusts in him and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise Him.” Here at Bible League Canada, we often hear from partners around the world who are being persecuted for their faith in Jesus. And while they suffer physical harm and even imprisonment, they all testify to God’s protection over their hearts and minds. He will be your strength and shield too.

These have been words from the heart.
