Words from the Heart for Saturday October 12th, 2019
But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its rays. And you will go out and frolic like well-fed calves.
Malachi 4:2 (NIV)
The Sun of Righteousness
The two sunniest major cities in Canada are Alberta’s two largest cities – Calgary and Edmonton. Calgary receives 2396 hours of bright sunshine on an average every year and experiences about 333 sunny days annually. 52% of the daylight hours in the city are sunny. Edmonton is North America’s northernmost city with a population of over 1 million. Like Calgary, it experiences a humid continental climate with extremely cold winters and cool summers. The city receives 2345 hours of bright sunshine a year, 325 days with some bright sunshine, and 50% of sunny daylight hours.
God was silent for 400 years between the Old and New Testaments. But before He went silent, He spoke through His prophets. The final one was Malachi, who pointed toward the moment that God would once again speak. But it wouldn’t be through a prophet. Malachi 4:2 says, “But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its rays. And you will go out and frolic like well-fed calves.” After 400 years of silence, God spoke loudly and clearly. And He did it through His Son, the Lord Jesus. He is the final word from heaven, and the message He came to proclaim was that of righteousness and healing. And the message was not only spoken and taught, it was lived out all the way to the cross. Malachi’s prophecy was fulfilled in the coming of Jesus into the world and it will further be fulfilled when He returns and establishes His eternal kingdom. That will bring the completion of God’s redemptive plan and will usher in His kingdom. No wonder God’s people will go out and celebrate – and they will do so for eternity.
