But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!

Amos 5:24 (NIV)

Justice

The Canada that listened to Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous speech in 1963 congratulated itself on its mostly peaceful past, a past that included serving as a refuge for escaped slaves. “Deep in our history of struggle for freedom,” Dr. King said, “Canada was the North Star” – the star followed by the Underground Railroad. “We sang of ‘heaven’ that awaited us and the slave masters listened in innocence, not realizing that we were not speaking of the hereafter,” he explained. “Heaven was the word for Canada.”

In some of his most famous speeches, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr quoted Amos 5:24: “But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!” It has been the heart cry of human beings down through the ages to be treated justly. History, however, shows that justice has too often been delayed or denied, and millions of people have never received the justice they deserve for the wrongs have been perpetrated against them. Injustice is a direct result of the sin that marks every human heart. Out of that sin comes selfishness, greed and self-centredness, hatred, prejudice and pride, all of which lead to injustice. As usual, the Gospel has the answer. The God of the Bible doesn’t miss a thing. He sees every injustice and through Jesus Christ He has set about to make all things right. The prophet Hosea has been given a glimpse into the future – and there is coming a day when justice will roll on like a river, correcting all the injustice that has ever been done. It is this truth that so many have clung to and continue to. The day is coming soon when justice will come.

These have been words from the heart.
