But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us.

II Corinthians 4:7 (NKJV)

Treasure in Earthen Vessels

In the Genesis account of creation we are humbled to see that the Lord made man from the dust of the earth. The Spirit shows us through the Apostle Paul that these “earthen” vessels are very important to the Lord. He chooses to put the treasure of the life and message of Christ within us. That will make the clear statement that the power is of God and not of us. We are just containers made of dust!

Archeologists continue to find some of Canada’s oldest handmade vessels. Earthenware utility pottery has been produced by Europeans in Canada since the mid-17th century (and by the Indigenous peoples long before). Utility pottery was the most widely used form of container ware since, being made of local clay, it was inexpensive and readily replaceable. Hand-blown glass, cast or soldered metalwares and barrels or firkins were considerably more expensive and had fewer uses.

You are not perfect. I know this doesn’t come as a surprise to you – most of us are more than aware of just how often we fall short of even our own standards. On a daily basis we let ourselves down and disappoint even those we love the most. And the Holy Spirit does a great job of bringing conviction when we fall short of God’s standards. How we handle our sin and shortcomings makes all the difference to whether we live in victory or not. Paul the apostle was aware of his humanity, and openly shares about it in his epistles. For example, in 2 Corinthians 4:7 we read: “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us.” God chooses to work in us in spite of our broken humanity – earthen vessels as Paul says here. He does this on purpose – not so that he can beat us up for our faults and failures, but so that His power and glory might be seen in us. How have you seen God’s power unleashed in the earthen vessel of your life recently?
