But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him.

1 Corinthians 1:27-29 (NIV)

The Lowly

When Canada eliminated the lowly penny back in 2012, it joined a growing list of countries that had done the same thing. Already by then Sweden, New Zealand, Mexico, Australia, Israel and Brazil had done away with the smallest of their currencies. The move made sense from a fiscal point of view. The last year Canada produced a penny, it cost 1.6 cents each to produce. By not producing pennies, the government saved and an estimated 11 million dollars a year.

If you have ever applied for a job, you know how harrowing the process can be. The best companies look for the most highly qualified and the most educated and experienced. You had better interview well and have done your homework to prepare. These are principles that drive the kingdoms of the world. But listen to what Paul says drives the kingdom of God. 1 Corinthians 1:27-29 says: “But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him.” I have met the people that God chooses to do ministry. There are some that could in fact lead corporations, but instead they are humbly serving God in ministry. I have also met those who were transformed by Christ in prison while they were in prison for some of the most heinous crimes. I have met those with little formal education who are leading movements of churches. God calls the redeemed and the willing. Are you?

These have been words from the heart.
