Words from the Heart for Saturday May 8th, 2021
Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.
Matthew 6:21 (NLT)
Where Your Treasure Is
A fabled treasure purportedly lies hidden on Oak Island in Nova Scotia. If the stories are to be believed, everything from millions in cash to Shakespeare’s lost folios, Queen Marie Antoinette of France’s jewels and even the Holy Grail are buried there. Stories of the island’s treasure date back to the 18th century when early settlers claimed a pirate had dumped his booty in a sinkhole later dubbed the ‘Money Pit’. Over the years, hundreds of fortune seekers have tried their hand at finding the treasure.
Someone in the ancient past said that the best way to measure what is important to you is to look at your cheque book. These days, it would be your credit card bill. If you took a few minutes to look through your bill this month, what would it tell you about where your priorities are? Jesus spoke about this as well. He says in Matthew 6:21: “Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.” Followers of Jesus are wise to take spiritual inventory often. We are called to examine our heart to see if it is in sync with both the general Kingdom of God principles and with God’s will for our individual lives. One of the ways to do that is to look at what our spending looks like. We always put our money where our heart is. That’s what Jesus is clearly teaching here. But there is more here than a financial treasure. We can judge what is important by how we spend our time, what excites us, what we do in our spare time. Take time today to do some spiritual inventory.
