Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

James 4:8 NIV

Come Near

If you are traveling as a Canadian outside Canada, there is nothing like boarding an Air Canada flight to make you feel like you are getting near to home. Sadly, it was announced by Cirium, an aviation analytics firm in January, that Air Canada comes last of all North American airlines when it comes to being on-time. The report says that its planes are at least 15 minutes late at least one-third of the time. Only 63% of its flights were on time.

I’m sure you’ve had times in your life when God seems so far away. It is usually during times of stress, or crisis, or grieving. It could be during times when we have not practiced spiritual disciplines and have moved away from daily time in God’s word and prayer. Maybe it’s because you have succumbed to sin, and the lifestyle you are now living has drawn you away from the Lord. The good news is that God is never far away – He is as close as a prayer. God makes a promise to you if you are at the place where God seems far away. The apostle writes this in James 4:8: “Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” Whatever the reason God seems so far away, there is an antidote. It’s never too late for you to draw near to God. If sin has drawn you away, repent and trust Christ to cleanse you and transform your life. If you’ve been trying to live your life with a foot in Christ and a foot in the world, become single-minded in your commitment to Christ. God will draw you near to Him.

These have been words from the heart.
