Words from the Heart for Saturday March 9th, 2019
Then the Israelites cried out to the Lord, “We have sinned against you, forsaking our God and serving the Baals.”
Judges 10:10 (NIV)
We Have Sinned
Google “sin in Canada” and what you get are hundreds of links to Canada’s Social Insurance Number – the SIN number. When Social Insurance Numbers were first introduced 50 years ago, plastic cards were issued. In spite of Service Canada’s warnings not to, many people still carry them on their person. On March 28, 2014 Service Canada stopped producing the plastic cards. As more Canadians use online automated services there is less need for a physical card. As well, the government felt that this modernization of the SIN program would better protect personal information.
Like us, the hearts of the Israelites were fickle. Though they had stood with Joshua and proclaimed that they would serve the Lord, it didn’t take long before they had turned their backs on Him and had begun to integrate pagan worship into their lives and allow the false gods to have an influence in their lives. This displeased the Lord and at one point Philistines and Ammonites captured the people of God. At their lowest point, we read this in Judges 10:10: “Then the Israelites cried out to the Lord, “We have sinned against you, forsaking our God and serving the Baals.” It took this severe reprimand from the Lord to get the attention of His people to turn their hearts back to Him. And even then, it wasn’t until they got rid of their foreign idols, this being true repentance, that the Bible says He could bear Israel’s misery no longer. What in your life would be the equivalent of the Baals? What do you have to get rid of to truly repent?
These have been words from the heart.
