Words from the Heart for Saturday March 30th, 2019

Do this so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go and that the Lord may keep his promise to me: ‘If your descendants watch how they live, and if they walk faithfully before me with all their heart and soul, you will never fail to have a successor on the throne of Israel.’

1 Kings 2:3-4 (NIV)

A Charge to His Son

There are over 1,700 Canadians in jail abroad—over one-third of them for drug-related offences. Carrying any kind of drugs, even prescription drugs, across international borders can cause problems. When you travel abroad, you are subject to the laws of the country you are visiting. If you get caught with illegal drugs, even if they are considered legal in Canada, being a foreigner or not knowing the local laws is no excuse—any more than it would be in Canada. Your Canadian citizenship does not give you immunity or preferential treatment in other countries.

At the end of David’s life, he spoke to his son, Solomon, who would step into his immense shoes as king of Israel. Solomon would be known as the wisest of all kings, and David gave some great wisdom in his charge to his son, the crown prince. 1 Kings 2:3-4 says, “Do this so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go and that the Lord may keep his promise to me: ‘If your descendants watch how they live, and if they walk faithfully before me with all their heart and soul, you will never fail to have a successor on the throne of Israel.’” David centered Solomon’s thoughts on the Lord. He called his son to be strong, to act like a man and observe what the Lord requires. He called Solomon to walk in obedience to God and keep His decrees. This is wise counsel for all of us. Because if we do so, we will have the promise that David speaks of here – we will be successful in our walk with Jesus and will never fail in doing what God has called and equipped us to do.
