Words from the Heart for Saturday March 2nd, 2019
On the day the Lord gave the Amorites over to Israel, Joshua said to the Lord in the presence of Israel: “Sun, stand still over Gibeon, and you, moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.
Joshua 10:12 (NIV)
The Sun Stands Still
Southern Alberta and Saskatchewan form the sun belt of Canada. The swath from Calgary, Alberta to Estevan, Saskatchewan boasts over 2375 hours of bright sunshine each year. The amount of sun shining peaks in the southeast corner of Alberta, at Manyberries. From 1971 to 1990, the hamlet averaged 2567 hours of sunshine a year, accounting for 55 percent of its daylight period. Its sunniest month is July.
When Israel arrived in the Promised Land, their challenges had just begun. There would be battle after battle and some were more challenging than others. In one battle, five kings had united to take on the army of Israel. God told the Joshua not to worry – the Lord would win this battle – and He did. As if this wasn’t enough, God performs a miracle. Joshua 10:12 says: “On the day the Lord gave the Amorites over to Israel, Joshua said to the Lord in the presence of Israel: “Sun, stand still over Gibeon, and you, moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.” The God of Israel is the One True God, who is the Creator of all the universe. He works within the laws of science that He put into place, but He is free to set them aside when that brings Him glory. Through all that was taking place in the early years of the Israelites’ time in the Promised Land, He showed His glory in so many ways, but none so powerfully as the day He caused the heavenly bodies that mark time to obey their Creator. If the Lord has this much power, imagine what He can do in your life.
These have been words from the heart.
