If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
Romans 10:9 NIV
A flotilla of motorboats, canoes, dinghies and jet-skis helmed by farmers raced to move dozens of trapped cows near Abbotsford from frigid waters as floods hit the Canadian province of British Columbia back in November 2021. After a month’s worth of rain in two days, the downpours triggered widespread flooding. Mudslides hit cities and towns across the province. Among the worst-affected areas was Abbotsford, one of the largest cities in the province by land size, with approximately half of BC’s farms.
In Jesus day, religion put a huge burden on those who were genuinely trying to live a life that pleased God. So often, it does the same today. Legalism continues to make life miserable for those who are told they have to do certain things in order to earn God’s favour. The world usually believes, if they believe in God at all, that heaven is gained if you do more good things than bad – as if God holds all our actions and attitudes on a scale. That is the foundation of man-made religion around the world – pray enough, give enough, act a certain way, and hopefully you get your god’s attention and earn his favour. What a contrast to what the Bible teaches. One of the most-memorized verses in the Bible is Romans 10:9: “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” It is memorized by so many because it is the heart of the good news of Jesus. HE has done all that is necessary for eternity to be guaranteed. By His death on the Cross, our salvation is secured. We just need to believe and confess.
These have been words from the heart.
