You faithfully answer our prayers with awesome deeds, O God our savior. You are the hope of everyone on earth, even those who sail on distant seas.

Psalm 65:5 (NLT)

You Are the Hope

When the boundary settlement of 1846 determined that the mouth of the Columbia River would be US territory, the Columbia River became impractical as a supply route for the Hudson’s Bay Company. The Hudson’s Bay Company decided instead to bring the goods from Langley up the Fraser River to the head of the navigation, where Fort Hope was built in 1848-49. The fort was the point of transfer from water to land on the “Brigade Trail” between Fort Langley and the posts of the interior. From Fort Hope, the goods were sent to Kamloops and then onwards to Alexandria for distribution by water to the post of New Caledonia.

In the days before airlines, or railways, or ox cart and Red River wagons, the quickest means of transportation was on the water. But there were great dangers in this kind of travels. Storms arose, rocky shoals destroyed ships, and there was the fear of uncertainty of what was just beyond the horizon, or living just below the surface. This was a bit of a description of all of life, and David speaks to it in Psalm 65:5: “You faithfully answer our prayers with awesome deeds, O God our savior. You are the hope of everyone on earth, even those who sail on distant seas.” God is close by no matter where life takes us. And David had discovered that no matter where he went, God was right there with him. When he prayed, God faithfully answered, and powerfully so. God hasn’t changed one bit since David wrote these words. No matter where you go, God is with you. And when you lay out your needs before Him, He will faithfully answer with awesome deeds.

These have been words from the heart.
