Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.

Proverbs 16:3 NIV

God Will Establish Us

With the Cold War in full swing, throughout the mid-1950s, prime ministers Louis St. Laurent and his successor John Diefenbaker attempted to create a new, highly advanced jet fighter, the Avro Arrow. The controversial aircraft was cancelled by Diefenbaker in 1959. Diefenbaker instead purchased the BOMARC missile defence system and American aircraft. In 1958 Canada established (with the United States) the North American Aerospace Defense Command, more commonly known as NORAD, which still exists today.

Human beings love to establish things – whether it’s something as impactful as a continental missile defence system, or as important as a small business, or as precious as a family, we establish things. We make plans to establish our lives, thinking and praying through what we see as a sensible way forward. All of this makes sense – after all, our Creator made us creative, gifting us with wisdom. For followers of Jesus, however, we must remember one very important thing – we can make all the plans we want, and deem necessary, but ultimately, God is in control. Wise King Solomon understood this and wrote in Proverbs 16:3: “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” Solomon is not saying that we should not make our plans, and put them into effect. What he is saying is that once we make our plans, we are to commit those plans to the Lord. He will speak into them. If we have sought Him during the process of establishing our plan, we can count on His blessing. If He is in our plans, He will establish them. As you make your plans, make sure God is a part of the planning team.

These have been words from the heart.
