Words from the Heart for Saturday July 28th, 2018
Sing to the Lord with grateful praise; make music to our God on the harp. He covers the sky with clouds; he supplies the earth with rain and makes grass grow on the hills. He provides food for the cattle and for the young ravens when they call.
Psalm 147:7-9 (NIV)
Sing to the Lord
Truly our praise before the Lord is “grateful praise.” Our Creator God is the sustainer of life. He has proven His ability to meet the needs of all He has created. And, our song and music to Him expresses how grateful we are for His commitment to us as His created ones.
One of the most famous, and popular of Canada’s folk songs is, “Farewell to Nova Scotia.” It is believed to have been written just prior to or during the First World War. “”Farewell to Nova Scotia”” harkens back to the day when Nova Scotia was renowned for “”wooden ships and iron men””. In 1808 a Glasgow newspaper printed “”The Soldier’s Adieu,”” attributed to Robert Tannahill. It has several lines and phrases in it that suggest it was a source of inspiration for the song.
As we go about our daily lives, enjoying the fresh air, food on the table, plenty of water for drinking, cooking and bathing, it is too easy to forget the One who supplies all of this. The Bible teaches that nothing happens by chance. Every good thing we have is a gift from our Heavenly Father who created it all and lovingly provides for us. The Psalmist recognized this and wrote this in Psalm 147:7-9, “Sing to the Lord with grateful praise; make music to our God on the harp. He covers the sky with clouds; he supplies the earth with rain and makes grass grow on the hills. He provides food for the cattle and for the young ravens when they call.” God cares about everything in His creation—from the tiniest of things to you and me. As we enjoy all that He provides, our response is one of praise and adoration. That is often expressed through song, as the Psalmist mentions here, but ought also to be expressed in how we live our lives and serve others. Take time today to express thanks to the Lord for all He has provided for you.
These have been words from the heart.
