… your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

God’s Will Be Done

Most Canadians believe their country exerts at least some influence in world affairs today, and that it has grown over the past 20 years, largely because of its peacekeeping and/or military activities focusing on fighting terrorism. Young people aged 15 to 24 express greater confidence about Canada’s sway on the international scene, with 25 percent believing Canada has a lot of influence globally and 72 percent indicating this role has strengthened in the past two decades.

Christians naturally have eternity in mind. The moment we place our faith in Jesus Christ, we receive the gift of eternal life. So, it’s natural for us to look to eternity and long to enter into the presence of Jesus. However, the Bible teaches that we are not to be so heavenly minded that we don’t focus on God’s will for our lives right here and now. In fact, every time we pray the Lord’s Prayer, we are asking for the Lord’s will to be done on earth just as it is in heaven. Matthew 6:10 says “your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” This isn’t some pie-in-the-sky thinking. We are called to be salt and light right here and right now. This isn’t easy – the world is far from God and has a worldview that is the antithesis of that of the Kingdom of God. It is easy to just want to pull the covers over our head and wait out the return of Christ. But the Bible doesn’t let us get away with this. As we pray “your will be done on earth as it is in heaven” this starts in our own lives.
