You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely.

Psalm 139:1-4 NIV

Remarkably Made

Today is Canada’s 156th birthday! On July 1, 1867 the British North America Act, today known as the Constitution Act, 1867, created Canada. The following June 28, Governor General Lord Monck signed a proclamation that requested all of her Majesty Queen Victoria’s subjects across Canada to celebrate July 1. In 1879 a federal law made July 1 a statutory holiday as “an anniversary of Confederation” which later became known as Dominion Day. Following the repatriation of the Constitution in 1982, the holiday became Canada Day.

Happy Canada Day! Today we celebrate the making of our remarkable nation. We express gratitude to those who played a critical part in forming Canada. As remarkable as Canada is, there is a creation that is far more remarkable – you, and me. You are not here by chance. You are not simply the result of billions of years of the survival of the fittest. You were created and crafted by a loving God who knows you by name. Listen to how King David describes this in Psalm 139:1-4: “You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely.” One of the things that you notice pretty quickly in reading the Gospels is that Jesus calls people by name, even before He is introduced to someone. He knows you by name as well, and He knows all about you. He made you, after all. How precious to know that your Creator knows you by name and loves you dearly.

These have been words from the heart.
