Words from the Heart for Saturday July 17th, 2021
Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old.
Proverbs 23:22 (NLT)
Listen to Your Father
According to the 2011 census, there were 8.6 million fathers in Canada, including biological, adoptive and stepfathers. The average amount of time that men spent per day on child care activities for children 12 years and under in 2010 was 131 minutes. 81% if fathers reported being involved in housework and related activities in 2010, up from 77% just five years previously. The average age of fathers at the time of the birth of their first biological child in Canada in 2011 was 28.3 years.
The family is God’s idea. That’s why the Bible is filled with instruction for families – the role of both mom and dad is spelled out as well as the call to children in how they are to relate to their parents. No matter how old we are, if we have at least one parent who is alive, we are called to respect and honour them. Proverbs 23:22 says this: “Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old.” As followers of Jesus, we are called to respect our parents, throughout out lives. Ultimately, we are to show respect to the Lord who loved us enough to redeem us. One of the ways we can do that is to show respect to our parents. Moms and dads are not perfect. Neither are we. There are no caveats here. We are to take time with dad, we are to respect mom. How have you been doing with this recently? This ought to be a key part of our witness for Christ. Jesus showed great respect for His mother and He always listened to His Heavenly Father. Surely we can do the same.
These have been words from the heart.
