Better to have little, with fear for the Lord, than to have great treasure and inner turmoil.

Proverbs 15:16 (NLT)

It is Better

According to its website, The Better Canada Initiative is an incubator of ideas, policy, and important conversations. “As a non-partisan, nonprofit organization, BCI strives to be the civil-society place where all Canadians can discuss, understand and articulate public policy information in Canada. The Better Canada Initiative aims to bring the best minds of Canada to one central location. In order to do this, we require the knowledge of a diverse group of Canadians to frequently comment.”

There are people who cross our path that are unforgettable. Sometimes they are someone famous or important – I’ll never forget “bumping into” President George HW Bush at Expo 86 in Vancouver – he was the Vice President at the time. But the people that I remember the most, who impressed me the most, were those who are not rich and famous – they are the humble servants of the Living God. King Solomon, certainly among the rich and famous of his day, noticed this as well. In Proverbs 15:16 he wrote: “Better to have little, with fear for the Lord, than to have great treasure and inner turmoil.” Our society loves to emulate the wealthy and influential. What we fail to see is that many of those people have no inner peace. Their lives are filled with turmoil and brokenness. Solomon looked at some of those in his kingdom who didn’t have much of what the world offers, but had a vibrant and life-giving relationship with the Lord. He noticed that what they had was far superior to riches and fame. Which gets to a good question – what are your pursuing in life? Only when you pursue Christ will you have true treasure.

These have been words from the heart.
