Words from the Heart for Saturday January 5th, 2019
I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.
Genesis 12:2 (NIV)
A Great Nation
Sir Wilfred Laurier, Canada’s seventh Prime Minister, was came to that position in 1896 following Sir John A. Macdonald’s death. He famously said, “The 19th century was the century of the United States. I think we can claim that it is Canada that shall fill the 20th century.” Those taking hold of Laurier’s claim have frequently reduced his statement to simply, “The 20th century belongs to Canada.”
Even before He created the world and gave men and women freewill, knowing they would use that freewill to sin, God had a plan in place to redeem the world. It wasn’t long after the great flood, having promises to never again destroy the earth in that manner, that He begins to put His plan into place. He calls a man named Abram and makes a great promise to him in Genesis 12:2: “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.” I often wonder what Abram thought of this call and promise. He had to set out from the familiar and walk by faith, trusting the God who had spoken to him but didn’t tell him where they were going. But, what a promise. Abram was obedient to that call – and the promise has come true. Abram became Abraham and is celebrated today as the Father of the Jewish and Arab nations. His offspring continue to play a vital part in the geopolitical affairs of our day. God got all of this in place, and you can trust Him to look after His plan for your life as well. Trust Him as Abraham did.
These have been words from the heart.
