Words from the Heart for Saturday January 26th, 2019
Moses …said to them, “These are the things the Lord has commanded you to do: For six days, work is to be done, but the seventh day shall be your holy day, a day of sabbath rest to the Lord.
Exodus 35:1-2a (NIV)
A Sabbath Rest
In September of 2017 the results of a study of Canadian sleep patterns were released. More than 10,000 Canadians were surveyed and what was discovered was surprising. More than 50% of women have a difficult time getting to sleep and staying asleep. One in three Canadians are not getting enough sleep. Almost 50% of Canadians don’t find their sleep refreshing. And while women get more sleep than men, both are getting less sleep than in 2005.
Man made religions are based on works and performance, in a futile effort to earn the attention of the gods who are not gods at all. What a futile and tiring way to go through life, and this religion only leads to fear and exhaustion. Life is tiring enough without the extra pressure of having to work to earn some kind of spiritual blessing. What a contrast to the Christian faith. All that is needed for our salvation has been provided by Jesus’ death and resurrection. Our part is simply to receive by faith the free gift of eternal life. Our God doesn’t add to the burden of life. He is all about offering rest to His people. Exodus 35:1-2 says this: “Moses …said to them, ‘These are the things the Lord has commanded you to do: For six days, work is to be done, but the seventh day shall be your holy day, a day of sabbath rest to the Lord.’” Jesus would later clarify that the Sabbath was designed for mankind, to give men and women the rest, physically and spiritually, that we need so much. He understands that life in a fallen world can be exhausting and He loves us enough to give us rest.
These have been words from the heart.
