Words from the Heart for Saturday January 19th, 2019
…Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, “Up! Leave my people, you and the Israelites! Go, worship the Lord as you have requested. Take your flocks and herds, as you have said, and go. And also bless me.”
Exodus 12:31-32 (NIV)
Go Worship the Lord
St. George’s Round Church is a wooden round church in the neo-Classical Palladian style located in Downtown Halifax. Construction on the church began in 1800 thanks in large part to the financial backing of the British royal family. The church’s architect remains a mystery, but Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn (and father of Queen Victoria) is believed to have been highly involved in the design process. The church was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1983 given its associations with the early history of Halifax and its Palladian architecture.
The people of Israel had been in Egypt for 430 years and it was time for God to put His plan into action. He had to break through Pharaoh’s stubborn heart and did so just long enough for Pharaoh to agree to let the people go. In Exodus 12:31-32 we read: “…Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, “Up! Leave my people, you and the Israelites! Go, worship the Lord as you have requested. Take your flocks and herds, as you have said, and go. And also bless me.” We usually think of the deliverance of the Israelites in light of what they were leaving behind. But there is also the point of what they were heading to. The Promised Land awaited, an opportunity to worship the Lord unhindered. The Exodus is a beautiful picture of the deliverance that God provided us in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Just like the people of Israel, our salvation is not simply from the life of sin and guilt that was ours before we came to know Christ, but is also towards something. Our salvation takes us towards God’s promised land of His perfect will for our lives.
These have been words from the heart.
