But while Joseph was there in the prison, the Lord was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden. So … he was made responsible for all that was done there. The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph’s care, because the Lord was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.

Genesis 39:21-23 (NIV)

In Prison

Constructed in 1859 and renovated in 1945, 1981 and 1994, Her Majesty’s Penitentiary is located in St. John’s. It is the primary facility for housing medium/maximum security male prisoners. All admissions from the Avalon Peninsula, high security male inmates, long-term remands and those awaiting transfer to a federal penitentiary are housed at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary. The penitentiary has recently been at full capacity, with 175 men serving provincial terms up to two years less a day along with those awaiting court dates on remand.

The life of Joseph is a reminder of God’s providential care for His people and the preparation He makes in our lives for what He has next for us to do. Joseph is sold into slavery in Egypt by his jealous brothers. He is assigned to the household of the Prime Minister, and when falsely accused of assault, ends up in prison. It seems that all of this is horrible, but God is quietly in the midst of all that is happening in Joseph’s life. Genesis 39:21-23 says this: “But while Joseph was there in the prison, the Lord was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden. So … he was made responsible for all that was done there. The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph’s care, because the Lord was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.” To the outsider, Joseph’s life looked like a challenge. But Joseph knew that God was guiding him, no matter what was happening in that life. We are called to reach the point where no matter what, we recognize God’s guidance. He is working out His perfect plan for your life.
