Words from the Heart for Saturday February 8th, 2020
…a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.
Ecclesiastes 3:8 (NIV)
Love and Hate
A recent post online asked Canadians what they hate about their country. For those of us who live here, the responses will not be surprising. Among other things, those who responded said they hated the high price of internet, cell phone plans and flights. Those who lived in cities like Toronto and Vancouver said they hated the high price of housing, and the lack of reliable public transportation. And, of course, Canadians posted about how they hate our weather.
From the time we are young, particularly if we are followers of Jesus, we are taught to love. It is, after all, the heart of the Gospel. Jesus commanded His followers to love God first, and love others as we love ourselves. There is no exception to this. That is how we are to live in community with others, as a testimony to our relationship to the Living God. How then do we process the wisdom of Solomon in Ecclesiastes 3:8, “…a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.” A time to love and a time to hate? Hate is such a strong word. We tell our children not to use it. But the Bible uses it. There are things that God hates. Proverbs 6 tells us that God hates seven things – haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness and a person who stirs up conflict. These are justice issues, and they ruin lives and relationships. We are to hate them, as God does.
These have been words from the heart.
