Words from the Heart for Saturday February 6th, 2021
When you pray, don’t babble on and on as the Gentiles do. They think their prayers are answered merely by repeating their words again and again. Don’t be like them, for your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask him!
Matthew 6:7-8 (NLT)
Don’t Babble On
According to the babbel.com website: “To no one’s surprise, English and French are the most spoken languages in Canada. But did you know that there are 67 Aboriginal tongues currently alive and kicking in Canada? (Cree is the most populous Aboriginal language, with 69,975 native speakers.) Or that Mandarin is the third most common mother tongue? Or that the number of Canadians able to speak a language other than English or French is currently on the rise? Or that Tagalog is the fastest-growing language in the nation?”
It’s appropriate that a website named babbel.com has an article about languages. The Bible tells us that at the tower of Babel, God confused the language of the human race and scattered them across the earth. From the tower of Babel we get the word babble, a word that is used by Jesus in Matthew 6:7-8: “When you pray, don’t babble on and on as the Gentiles do. They think their prayers are answered merely by repeating their words again and again. Don’t be like them, for your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask him!” Just as in Jesus’ day, prayer in many faith systems today is nothing more than the repetition of some religious words. Jesus calls His followers to prayer that is a conversation friend to friend. What a privilege we have to come before our Creator and lay before Him our needs, our desires, our praise and adoration. Our God knows what we need even before we ask, but He desires to hear us express in prayer the desire of our heart. Take time today to have a good conversation with the God of the Bible, the God who both hears and speaks.
These have been words from the heart.
