Words from the Heart for Saturday February 2nd, 2019
Obey my laws. Be careful to follow my rules. I am the Lord your God. Keep my rules and laws. The one who obeys them will benefit from living by them. I am the Lord.
Leviticus 18:4-5 (NIRV)
The Benefit of Obedience
Back in December of 2017, a Sherwood Park Alberta dog was named the most obedient canine in Canada. Lee Kozicki’s dog, Scooter, — a miniature poodle — had been awarded the top spot in the 2017 Grand Master Obedience Trial. Scooter scored just over 198 points out of a possible 200. Kozicki has been training and showing dogs since the ’80s. She took Scooter home when he was just 10 weeks old.
Our salvation comes by grace through faith alone. We can’t earn it or work for it, and we certainly don’t deserve it. God offers eternal life as a gift, purchased by Jesus through his death and resurrection. Which then begs the question – does the Old Testament law have any role in our lives today? The Bible teaches two things about the law. First, it is the measuring line against which we judge our lives. One read through the Ten Commandments and our need for a redeemer becomes quickly obvious. The second impact of the law in our lives is found in Leviticus 18:4-5: “””Obey my laws. Be careful to follow my rules. I am the Lord your God. Keep my rules and laws. The one who obeys them will benefit from living by them. I am the Lord.”” There is great benefit to living our lives according to God’s standards. Just look at our world to see the results of not living according to the instructions God gives in his law. There is great benefit to our souls, bodies and relationships when we live lives based on the good counsel that God gives to his people.
