The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.
John 1:9 NIV
If you find yourself in Saskatchewan over the holidays, you might want to head to Saskatoon. The prairie city is proud of the BHP Enchanted Forest, one of the longest-running and best Christmas light shows in Canada. According to their website, the BHP Enchanted Forest is “a special holiday event of the Saskatoon Zoo Foundation and Saskatoon City Hospital Foundation at the Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park. We are celebrating our 25th Anniversary!” The display is open November 18th, 2023 – January 7th, 2024.
In a few weeks, we will be experiencing the day with the fewest hours of light. In this part of the world, we can look forward to the days getting longer and the nights shorter. In the meantime, in dealing with the darkness, we fill our world with lights. We light up the night and are mesmerized by their beauty. We crave the light. The apostle understood this and wrote in John 1:9 “The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.” We crave the light, but not just physical light. Our deepest longing is for meaning and purpose. How did we get here and what is our purpose? In a suffering world, there must be something greater. There is no coincidence to man’s search for meaning. Our Creator has birthed this longing into the heart of every human being, this longing for the light that will lead us to Him. This is the story of the first Christmas, John says. Jesus is the true light, and when we trust Him, the light of eternity bursts into our lives.
These have been words from the heart.
