“The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).

Matthew 1:23 NIV

Listen to Words from the Heart

In July 1970, then Prince Charles made his inaugural visit to Canada when he landed in Ottawa for a two-day solo visit. He was later joined by the Queen, Prince Phillip and Princess Anne for a 10-day tour. Five years later, his naval career brings him into Canadian waters for three weeks during a stint aboard HMS Hermes. During this time he spent three days in Ottawa and made a week-long visit to the Northwest Territories. He has not been in Canada since becoming King Charles III.

In the first few chapters of the first book of the Bible, we read about the entrance of sin into the heart of Adam and Eve and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden, and from the presence of their Creator. The rest of the Hebrew Scriptures is the story of God putting into place His plan of redemption, His plan to draw men and women back into relationship with Him. The first glimpse of God’s plan was seen right in the Garden, where we learn that the day would come when the tempter would be crushed. Over the next millennia, promises would be made about the Messiah, the One who would redeem God’s creation. One such promise must have made little sense to the Jewish people. Their prophet Isaiah announced that a virgin would conceive. When would that happen? That question would be answered by an angel, speaking to the young Hebrew woman who would become the mother of Jesus, the Messiah. Matthew 1:23 records this: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Emmanuel’ (which means ‘God with us’).” The prophecy was coming true. Jesus was coming.

These have been words from the heart.
