God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars.
Genesis 1:16 (NRSV)
Two Great Lights
The first lighthouse in Canada was built in Louisbourg on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, in 1734. Over the years, the structure was damaged in battle, destroyed by fire and rebuilt several times. The lighthouse known today was built in 1923. The first two lighthouses on the West Coast opened at Race Rocks and Fisgard Island in 1860. After Confederation in 1867, Canada built a vast network of lighthouses to mark the sea routes essential to maritime safety and trade.
Solar eclipses are fascinating. In the middle of the day the sun disappears and the world grows dark. It helps us understand how important the sun is for life. If the sun were to ever flame out, all life on earth would end immediately. As only God could, He created the sun perfectly, and placed the earth at exactly the distance from the sun that life on the planet would flourish. Genesis 1:16 says “God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars.” As well as creating the sun, God created the moon. It too would have an effect on life on earth. It provides tides, which assists in the reproduction of aquatic life, remove pollutants and circulate nutrients that ocean plants and animals need to survive. God’s genius is seen in every aspect of the Biblical story of creation. If HHe took this much care in creating the sun, moon and stars, imagine how much care He has taken in creating you. In a world that teaches we are a product of chance, the Bible tells us that everything in our world, including you, has been created by a loving God.
