Words from the Heart for Saturday April 6th, 2019
Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay here; the Lord has sent me to Bethel.” But Elisha said, “As surely as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you.” So they went down to Bethel.
2 Kings 2:2 (NIV)
I Will Not Leave You
When a Canadian resident leaves Canada permanently, it is important to ensure that the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) will accept that you are a non-resident of Canada for tax purposes thereafter. The consequences to an investigation by the CRA can be catastrophic. The CRA may assess a person for Canadian tax on worldwide income for the entire period that person failed to claim to be a non-resident of Canada. The tax cost, plus interest and penalties for non-reporting, can be horrendous, even after taking foreign tax credits into account.
There is great wisdom in being mentored. Learning from someone with greater experience and the wisdom that comes from age helps us to avoid mistakes and plan well. Elisha the prophet understood this to be true. As the prophet Elijah was nearing the end of his life and ministry, Elisha commits to staying with his mentor until the end. 2 Kings 2:2 says, “Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay here; the Lord has sent me to Bethel.” But Elisha said, “As surely as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you.” So they went down to Bethel.” It wouldn’t be long until Elijah is transported miraculously into Glory. Before this happens, Elisha asks for a double portion of Elijah’s spirit. He has seen how Elijah had lived his life and the miracles he had performed, and he wanted to have an even greater impact for the Lord. That is a lofty goal for all who follow the Lord Jesus. Do you have a passion to impact this world with the love and grace of God? Stay close to those who already are having such an impact.
