Then Asa called to the Lord his God and said, “Lord, there is no one like you to help the powerless against the mighty. Help us, Lord our God, for we rely on you, and in your name we have come against this vast army. Lord, you are our God; do not let mere mortals prevail against you.”

2 Chronicles 14:11 (NIV)

We Rely On You

The economic history of what is now Canada begins with the hunting, farming and trading societies of the Indigenous peoples. Following the arrival of Europeans in the 16th century, the economy has undergone a series of seismic shifts, marked by the early Atlantic fishery, the transcontinental fur trade, then rapid urbanization, industrialization and technological change. Although different industries have come and gone, Canada’s reliance on natural resources — from fur to timber to minerals to oil, and on export markets for these commodities, particularly the United States — has underpinned much of the economy through the centuries and does so still in many regions today.

We all face battles in life. They aren’t military battles, but they can be just as challenging. Relationships can go south, inner struggles can overwhelm us, and physical issues can discourage us. Where can we turn when we find ourselves in the midst of a great struggle? 2 Chronicles 14:11 says, “Then Asa called to the Lord his God and said, “Lord, there is no one like you to help the powerless against the mighty. Help us, Lord our God, for we rely on you, and in your name we have come against this vast army. Lord, you are our God; do not let mere mortals prevail against you.” When the battles comes, people look to all sorts of things to try to help them through. Some turn to alcohol and drugs, others to sex and other pleasures, others to the occult. Asa knew that there was only one place to turn for victory to be assured. There is no one like the Lord to help the powerless. Everything else leaves a person either in worse shape or without hope. Only the Lord Jesus can guarantee victory in the battle.
