Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.

Enduring Love

Once a common feature of Canada’s urban landscape, Chinese hand laundries endured largely unchanged until the 1960s, when synthetic fabrics, dry cleaning, and improved home appliances made them less important to many Canadian families. For many early Chinese immigrant men, though, the laundry was among the few businesses that allowed them to thrive, marry, and raise families in their new home. Several municipalities actively discriminated against laundries by means of artificially high business tax rates. Despite such difficulties, the laundrymen persevered and prospered.

We seldom stop long enough to count our blessings. I wonder what our list would look like if we took a morning sometime and just made a list of everything for which we are grateful. It can be big things, which will come easily, and small things that we so often take for granted. We should be able to fill a book. The Bible often calls us to be thankful. Back In 1 Chronicles 16:34, we read, “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.” So many things in this life will pass away, but God’s love and His goodness never will. As a result, He pours out His blessings on us all. These are the same words that David uses in the Psalms. Generation after generation needed to be reminded to stop and count their blessings. Over and over the Bible reminds us to stop and thank the Lord. While His love endures forever, ours is so fickle. So here is another reminder to take time to give thanks. No matter what is happening in your life right now, take stock of every blessing that God has poured into your life.

These have been words from the heart.
