Science will tell you that a human being is a physical being, 99% oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, calcium and phosphorous. Five elements make up most of the rest – potassium, sulfur, sodium, chlorine and magnesium. All eleven are necessary for life. What this doesn’t tell us is what is truly at the heart of a human being. Genesis 2:7 tells us “Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.” Science gets the first part right – we are created out of eleven elements that the Bible describes as “the dust of the ground.” What it misses is the second part – we are both physical and spiritual beings. Followers of Jesus are called to love Him and honour Him with both our physical bodies and our heart and soul. Romans 12:1 tells us that we are to offer our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God – this is our true and proper worship. In Matthew 22:36-37 Jesus tells us the greatest commandment is this: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.”

These have been words from the heart.
