In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

John 1:1-5 NIV

The Word Was God

Canadians use words and phrases that no one else in the world understands. These include wearing a pair of blue jeans along with a blue denim jacket – that’s a Canadian tuxedo. The item of clothing Americans refer to as a bathrobe or (if they’re classy) a dressing gown is known to Canadians by it’s true name: the housecoat. In Canada, a knit hat is a toque — not a beanie. Worn by everyone in winter and by hipsters through the summer.

One of the first questions that children ask, as they begin to think about things like where did things come from and what is life all about, is, “Where did God come from?” The Bible answers that question in an interesting way, and it does it at the beginning of the Bible and in the first verses of the Gospel of John … “in the beginning, God.” There is an assumption in the Bible that God just is. He is without beginning. Before anything else existed, there was God – Elohim in Genesis, Logos in John’s Gospel. Logos is a Greek word that is translated “word” in English. Here is how the apostle puts it in John 1:1-5: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” In Genesis, God speaks everything into being. In John we learn that the Word is Jesus – through whom everything is created.

These have been words from the heart.
