Words from the Heart for Monday September 23rd, 2019
Yet I will show love to Judah; and I will save them—not by bow, sword or battle, or by horses and horsemen, but I, the Lord their God, will save them.
Hosea 1:7 (NIV)
The Battle of Crysler’s Farm, fought on muddy, ploughed fields beside the St. Lawrence River on November 11, 1813, was a crucial moment in the history of Upper Canada, and marked the end of the most serious attempt to that time to invade Canada. With two American armies poised to meet at Montreal and cut British lines of communications, the British victory at Crysler’s farm has become known as the battle that saved Canada.
It is natural for people to seek help from others. When we are threatened we call the police, when we are in financial need, or hungry, we call The Salvation Army or the local food bank. This being said, it seems unbelievable to me that our greatest need is not for the police or a handout, but for peace of heart and the assurance of eternal life. This is only available through Jesus’ death and resurrection and that only came about because of God’s great love for us. Listen to how beautifully God’s love is expressed in Hosea 1:7: “Yet I will show love to Judah; and I will save them—not by bow, sword or battle, or by horses and horsemen, but I, the Lord their God, will save them.” God had been reaching out to the people of Israel for centuries, but He still had something better in mind. They didn’t understand this, of course. They had always looked to their king, or their army, to save them. But God had a better plan. Their greatest need, our greatest need, is for a new heart and a transformed life, and God would provide that in the person of His Son, the Lord Jesus. That’s how much He loves you.
These have been words from the heart.
