You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near.

Stand Firm

Even as this new school year was coming, and international students were returning to Canada, the federal government stood firm on its April 22 decision to not allow any flights into Canada that originated in India. It forced the Indian students to travel through a third country, something that was both time consuming and dangerous. One student from India told the National Post that he had friends who were having sleepless nights over getting to Canada. Roughly 23 percent of all international students in Canada come from India.

It isn’t always easy standing firm, particularly for Christians who are facing opposition and persecution for their faith in Jesus. Those of us who live in a country that guarantees freedom of religion and where we are used to getting what we want easily and quickly, have a difficult time with the command found in James 5:8: “You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near.” Patience is a fruit of the Holy Spirit and ironically, it can take some time to produce. We often learn patience only through having faced challenging times where we had to trust the Lord. We learn we must lean on Him in order to stand firm in our faith when the winds of opposition to the Kingdom of God blow against us. And while those challenging times can seem like they last an eternity, they do not. This life goes by so quickly. Jesus is coming again and will establish His Kingdom once and forever. In the meantime, we are to invite the Holy Spirit to produce patience, and we are to lean on Jesus in order to stand firm against whatever is trying to rock our lives.

These have been words from the heart.
