So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

Matthew 6:31-33 (NIV)

Seek First

A Canadian website taxback.com gives some practical advice to those who have immigrated to Canada on what they ought to do their first week in this country. The advice includes finding accommodation, getting a Social Insurance Number and opening up a bank account. Then they give this advice: “Don’t let the stress of your big move spoil your first week in Canada! It’s important to start exploring as soon as you arrive in Canada. Why? Well, the sooner you get out and about, the sooner your new destination will start to feel like home.

Everyone is seeking something. Most people seek after the things of this world – material things, temporal things, things that meet the needs of the flesh. Thoughts of eternity seldom cross their minds, except in some rare quiet moments or at a funeral. Jesus teaches His followers that the world has it exactly backwards. Here is what he says in Matthew 6:31-33: “So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” If what you are seeking has no eternal significance, you will gain nothing that has eternal impact. But if you seek the things of eternity through faith in Jesus Christ, you will gain eternal life and have the assurance of God’s love and care for you in this life as well. God loves you and desires to meet your needs according to His riches in Christ Jesus. Seek first His Kingdom.
