“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Take Heart

Back in 2020, the mental health of Canadians was a significant concern two years into the pandemic, especially for people between the ages of 18 and 34, according to the results of a poll released that year exclusively to Healthing. The survey, conducted by Maru Public Opinion in early 2022, looked at the mental health of over 1,500 Canadian adults. It found that 35 per cent of Canadian adults of all ages say their mental health was worse than it was in February 2020, before the pandemic began.

I was having a challenging day and a friend of mine knew it. He said to me, “you know, the final battle of the ages doesn’t hang in the balance. The day will come when Jesus simply says, “Enough”, and the battle will be over. I have thought of that counsel many times over the years when I have faced other challenging times. The challenges don’t last forever. Many don’t even last many days. And even if they do, Jesus is still in control. He says, in John 16:33: “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” I love the grammatical tense here – it is vitally important. Jesus doesn’t say, “one day, I’m going to overcome the world.” The overcoming is already done, Jesus says. When He rose from the grave, He overcame the world. He has overcome for you and wants you to be an overcomer too. So, take heart today. Whatever you’re facing, Jesus has already overcome.

These have been words from the heart.
