He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ. To this end I strenuously contend with all the energy Christ so powerfully works in me.
Colossians 1:28-29 NIV
The first labour organizations in Canada began in the early 1800s. They were inspired by the labour movements in Europe and the USA. These early unions were mostly local and craft-based, organizations that represented skilled workers in specific trades. The growth of industry in Canada during the late 19th century ushered in the expansion of unions. The Knights of Labor, founded in the US, had a large presence in Canada and advocated for workers’ rights across several industries.
God had called the apostle Paul to a great task – to share the good news of Jesus Christ among the Gentiles. He took that call seriously. His goal wasn’t just to lead them into a relationship with the risen Jesus, he wanted to bring them to the point of spiritual maturity, fully equipped to stand and speak for Christ. He would write this in Colossians 1:28-29: “He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ. To this end I strenuously contend with all the energy Christ so powerfully works in me.” It is a privilege to serve Jesus. Paul understood this and took his call seriously. Look at the adverbs he uses here – strenuously and powerfully. As he puts his whole might into admonishing and teaching, Jesus provides supernatural energy for the task. The Holy Spirit always works in partnership with those who are committed to being faithful to God’s call. What is God calling you to do? Are you committed to fulfilling that call, strenuously doing what He has perfectly gifted you to do? If so, you can count on the energy of Christ working powerfully in you.
These have been words from the heart.
