Words from the Heart for Monday January 13th, 2020
Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.
Exodus 20:12 (NIV)
Honour Your Mother and Father
Officially created by Her Majesty The Queen, Canadian honours are presented by the governor general to celebrate and thank extraordinary people for their tremendous contributions to our country. The granting of decorations and medals or an investiture into an order are also means of inspiring others to help build a better country. Canadian honours are respected around the world as a system of recognition that is merit-based, apolitical and accessible. Any person or group can nominate a fellow Canadian for one of the honours.
In my significant travels over the past couple of decades, I’ve noticed that no matter what the culture, language or nation, one thing is common – parents love their children and want the best for them. As I chat with immigrants to Canada, without exception they tell me that the transition to Canada has been difficult, but they are willing to pay the price because they want to give their children a chance for a better future. While too many children grow up in broken and dysfunctional homes, it is natural for parents to care for their children. The Lord who created us knew this, and so He commands children to honour their dad and mom. Exodus 20:12 says, “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.” This is the first command with a promise. As the people of Israel honoured their parents, God promised that they would live long in the promised land. No matter how old they are, life is so much better for children who honour their parents. How can you honour your parents today?
These have been words from the heart.
