A fool spurns a parents discipline, but whoever heeds correction shows prudence.
Proverbs 15:5 (NIV)
While Canada’s prison system is designed for correction rather than punishment, it appears as though the majority of inmates have not heeded correction. According to the 2014 Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) offender population profile, about 8 out of 10 male and 7 out of 10 female offenders have previous convictions. In the 2013 report, the statistics were 9 out of 10 men and 8 out of 10 women. Using conventional math, Canada has a recidivism rate of 70 to 80 per cent at the federal level.
I love being at the grandparent stage in life. It’s a joy watching my children being parents, having to discipline their children as we disciplined them. What’s interesting is that they pretty much use the same principles we did when they were little. All that to say, be careful parents how you raise your children. It will have an impact for many generations to come. King Solomon understood this, and so wrote in Proverbs 15:5: “A fool spurns a parent’s discipline, but whoever heeds correction shows prudence.” Parents are called to be consistent in raising their children. As you are, in most cases you will find your children responding to that discipline. Most children have an innate sense of justice, and even when they are wrong, if discipline is consistent, they will understand. I’m impressed with how my children communicate with their children when disciplining. They explain why “time out” is needed. God is our heavenly Father. He wants us to grow up to be mature followers of Jesus. Sometimes we blow it, or throw a spiritual tantrum and He has to discipline us. Understand that God loves you and His correction is always good for us.
