Happy Valentine’s Day! We focus on love today, and it serves as a good reminder that followers of Jesus are called to focus on love every day of the year. Throughout Scriptures we are commanded to love others. Jesus is very clear in this in John 15:12: “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.” This is not the sentimental love that is the mark of Valentine’s Day, as lovely as that can be. This is the courageous, sacrificial love that we see in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Followers of Jesus are called to love others in the same way He loved us. That is a serious commitment to give of our time, energy and resources, and for some, to give up life itself, in order to show the love of Jesus to others. It cost Jesus everything – and He had a lot to give up. This command of Jesus cannot be taken lightly. We need to constantly consider how we can love others by giving something that costs us something. Take time today to discover a way for you to love others like Jesus loved you. He commands you to do so.
These have been words from the heart.
