“Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,” says the Lord, who has compassion on you.

Isaiah 54:10 NIV

Unfailing Love

At the time of the passing of Prince Philip, a statement was released by the office of Canada’s Prime Minister that stated, “Prince Philip was a man of great purpose and conviction, who was motivated by a sense of duty to others. He will be fondly remembered as a constant in the life of our Queen – a lifelong companion who was always at her side offering unfailing support as she carried out her duties. A family has lost a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.”

My in-laws were married for over 70 years. Both were very young when they got married, and they both have lived into their 90s. Someone met my mother-in-law a while ago and when she told them that she had been married for over 70 years, the person asked incredulously, “to the same person?” We celebrate this kind of love – the unfailing love of a lifelong happy marriage. No couple gets through decades of marriage without having faced challenges – and it is that unfailing love that underpins a long marriage. It is a beautiful picture of God’s love for us. Isaiah 54:10 says, “’Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,’ says the Lord, who has compassion on you.” No matter what happens in your life, no matter how unfaithful you have been to the Lord, you can count on God loving you. He proved that in Jesus, who while we were still sinners, died for us. No matter how bad things get in our life, even if the very foundation of your life is shaken, God’s love never fails.

These have been words from the heart.
